This weekend (today is Saturday) is a long weekend due to a public holiday, on Monday. Here in the Netherlands, on 27th April, we celebrate King’s Day and a traditional treat is Tompouce (or Tompoes), which I shall attempt to make for the first time. It is similar to a cream slice or Mille Feuille with orange icing on top. Normally, the Dutch go a little bit crazy for this celebration. It’s an orange thing. In fact, King’s Night, which is the night before, usually means huge street parties around the country with thousands turning out in orange, in the streets of the major cities with live music and festivities going on till the wee small hours. And every year a city or town is nominated for a visit by the King and his family (sans l’orange) which is always very well received. Well, he is actually a nice bloke and the kids are always well behaved. This year it was supposed to be Maastricht….not anymore! Oh well, maybe next year.

I’m currently baking a condensed milk cake, not exactly the most exciting of names but it is what it is. Another first-time bake, should be out of the oven shortly. My hubby is snoozing on the sofa, the goats are snoozing in the sun and I’m listening to Joan as Policewoman. Inbetween that, I’m having three WhatsApp conversations about face masks, how many decibels the frogs in my pond can create and how my mother doesn’t have to login into Messenger again if she just follows my instructions……I have very noisy frogs! So, here’s the cake.

I'd say, tasty but needs something else so I might try it with some rum and raisins, that should perk it up a bit. Plus it might lighten it up slightly as it's very dense. Anyway, as this a two-parter, I'm going to resume this on Monday with tales of my Tompouce.

Monday, 27th.

Well, it’s another glorious day here in Limburg although we are expecting rain for the rest of the week so I’m on my third lot of washing. The washing I’ve been able to put off doing even though I have absolutely no reason to put it off but maybe this is a corona crisis symptom. As I have to fill my time, maybe by putting chores off, I feel that I’ve always got things to do. So, procrastinating is the way to fill the boredom of having nothing to do by making sure you always have something to do by not doing it…… Genius!

As I mentioned before, today is King’s Day and as promised I made Tompouce, or rather a version of it. I’ve gone with making fingers of Tompouce to make it easier to eat as it’s always a rather messy affair. This has proved to be a complete waste of time as I still managed to get cream all over my tits and up my nose. Yes, this is a regular occurrence, much to my hubby’s delight, but it does mean I do not own a single item of clothing without some kind of greasy stain on it. His suggestion to eat, naked, is an option until we leave our isolation and then it could be tricky if we go for a curry and I drop vindaloo all over my onion bhajis!
